Social constructivism originates from the Russian psychologist, Lev Vygotsky, circa 1932. It obliges students to use collaboration and interdependence to construct meaning through inquiry.

Vygostsky also was the first to articulate the zone of proximal learning; the need for healthy disequilibrium and readiness to succeed through supported learning (scaffolding).
